Tip : Difference between Attachment and Overlay in Xref

Most of the CAD users are confused about the difference between Attachment and overlay.

Attachment Option

• Open Mom.dwg and attach boy.dwg and girl.dwg
• Save and close Mom.dwg
• Open Dad.dwg and attach Mom.dwg
• Result : Mom and Both Xrefs (Boy & Girl) attached in Mom Xref also Appear

Overlay Option

• Open Mom.dwg and attach boy.dwg and girl.dwg
• Save and close Mom.dwg
• Open Dad.dwg and attach Mom.dwg
• Result : Only "Mom" Xref Appear

Quick Tip : Always the Preferred option is overlay because during the bind process there is a chance to have error due to circular references.
